Grape seed extract could be an anti-cancer treatment of the future

31/1/2012

I think this is a great example of researchers looking at the properties of a 'natural' product and developing the extract into a treatment which could be, quite literally, life saving.  The development of the grape seed extract into an anti-cancer treatment is still many years away but, so far, the results are looking promising especially since the grape seed extract was noted to kill cancer cells but not healthy cells.

The study was published this week in the journal Carcinogenesis which demonstrates that in both cell lines and mouse models, grape seed extract (GSE) kills head and neck squamous cell carcinoma cells, while leaving healthy cells unharmed.  It is estimated that over half a million people will die of head and neck cancer during 2012 - a frightening statistic.

A good summary of the key points from this published study can be found on the Colorado Cancer Blogs.
