London Regenerative Medicine Event, 19 November 2012

01/11/2013

This event was all about the manufacturing of regenerative medicines with three key speakers:

As ever it was an interesting and valuable event providing insight into the challenges of regenerative medicine.  There were a few key messages which I came away with:

  • The UK is really good at training bio-engineers of advanced cell biotechnology.
  • There is a need for Translational Research Centres.
  • There are three bottlenecks:
  • Cell manufacturing
  • Cell reprogramming
  • Biomaterials and devices
  • The control of stem cells has greatly improved: 4 days to 14 days.  To quote Professor Zandstra “control is a challenge, after that all hell lets loose!”

The over-riding message and one I will end this blog on, is:

“Do good science and get compelling data … don’t worry about IP, things will fall into place”

Good advice but I think the investors may not be happy if you don’t worry about IP!!
